Cleaning the Pump Pressure Switch is Important

A pump pressure switch is a simple electrical control that can be used to control electrically driven pumps. Its basic structure is a piston with one side exposed to fluid pressure. The other side is subject to atmospheric pressure. When the pressure inside the tank drops to a certain point, the contacts inside the switch open and close. This is the signal that causes the pump to turn on or off.

If the switch becomes stuck, it may need to be cleaned or replaced. Debris or spider webs can clog the contacts. Also, water leaks may damage the internal mechanism of the switch. To test if the switch is working, disconnect the power supply to your well pump. You can also use a non-contact voltage tester to check if the switch has power. If you suspect a pressure problem, you should consult a professional. They can replace your switch or diagnose the issue. Some problems can be fixed without replacing the unit.
Pressure switches can become clogged with debris, spider webs, or mold. These clogs can be removed temporarily by filing down the damaged area. But if the problem is more serious, you will need to replace the switch. If your well pump is leaking, it is likely that the pressure switch is the culprit. In this case, the switch will need to be cleaned.
